When you need an appointment
Since January 6, 2025, the Social Security Administration has required an appointment for nearly every in-person visit to a field office, including requests for a new or replacement Social Security card. The change followed a phased rollout — nearly 400 offices had already moved to appointment-only service earlier in 2024 — aimed at cutting wait times and freeing up staff for customers whose situations genuinely need a counter visit. If you show up without one, front-desk staff will generally ask you to schedule instead of serving you on the spot, unless your situation qualifies for an exception below.
Who can still walk in
SSA has said it won't turn people away simply because they couldn't schedule or didn't want to. Members of vulnerable populations, active-duty military personnel, people with terminal illnesses, and anyone in an urgent or specialized situation may still walk into a field office without an appointment. A handful of offices also run with little to no wait and continue serving walk-in visitors as a matter of course — but for most people, most services, scheduling ahead is now the standard, and the fastest way through the door.
How to schedule
You have three ways to get on the calendar. SSA's online appointment questionnaire, available at ssa.gov/manage-benefits/make-an-appointment, asks a few questions about what you need, then offers a phone or in-person time slot without you having to call anyone. If you'd rather talk to a person, call the National 800 Number at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) and tell the representative you want to schedule, change, or cancel an appointment. You can also call or visit your local field office directly — its number is listed on this site's location pages.
Best time to call
The national line is staffed from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time, Monday through Friday, in English, Spanish, and other languages. SSA's own guidance is that wait times to reach a representative are typically shorter in the morning, later in the week, and later in the month — the first week of any month and Wednesdays tend to be the busiest. If your first call gets a long hold estimate, hanging up and trying again the next morning is often faster than waiting it out.
Phone or in person — and what to bring
Not every appointment requires a trip to the office. Many requests — reporting a change of address, checking an application's status, or handling parts of a disability or retirement claim — can be completed entirely by phone once you're scheduled. When SSA does need to see you in person, bring your Social Security number, a government-issued photo ID, and any documents specific to your request, such as proof of identity and citizenship or immigration status for a card application. After you book, save the confirmation email or text — its link is how you reschedule or cancel later, and if a staff member booked it for you, you'll need the confirmation code they gave you as well.
Skip the appointment entirely
Some of the most common reasons people used to visit an office don't require a visit — or an appointment — at all. You can get a benefit verification letter, view your payment history, request a replacement SSA-1099 tax form, or update direct deposit information through a free mySSA account at ssa.gov, or by calling the automated system on the National 800 Number. Save the appointment for what actually needs a person: card replacements, in-depth application help, or anything the online tools can't resolve.
