How the holiday schedule is set
The Social Security Administration observes the same federal holiday schedule as every other executive branch agency, set each year by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. SSA field offices close on all 11 federal holidays. Because several of these are defined by weekday rather than a fixed calendar date — Thanksgiving, for example, is always the fourth Thursday in November — the exact date shifts from year to year, and when a holiday lands on a Saturday or Sunday, it's typically observed the preceding Friday or the following Monday instead.
What closes on a federal holiday
On a holiday, SSA field offices are closed to the public — there's no in-person appointment service, no walk-in window, and no way to pick up a printed card or document at the counter that day. If you had an appointment scheduled for a date that turns out to be a federal holiday, plan on it not happening as booked; see below for what to do.
Phone and online access still works
Not everything shuts down, though. SSA's automated phone system and your online my Social Security account remain available around the clock, including on holidays, for tasks like requesting a benefit verification letter, checking your payment history, or updating direct deposit information. What isn't available on a holiday is a live representative — the National 800 Number's staffed hours don't run on federal holidays, so if you need to talk to a person, plan your call for the next business day.
If your appointment falls on a holiday
If you already have an appointment scheduled and a holiday falls on or near that date, don't assume it will simply move automatically — contact your local field office directly, using the phone number and address on this site's listing for that office, to confirm your appointment is still valid or to reschedule it for the next open business day.
Check your local office before you go
Because how individual offices handle the day before or after a holiday can vary by location, the most reliable way to plan a visit around a holiday is to check the specific office you're heading to.
